His political convictions, for which he suffered exile, are expressed plainly in his Latin treatise on government, De Monarchia (circa 1313); in this work he projected enlightened imperial rule as the ideal system in which multiple conflicting states would be absorbed in one, church and state would be separated, and justice would be founded on Roman law. In addition to those who wrote in Latin, a number of the early Italian poets wrote in French or in Proven al, and borrowed most of their verse forms and literary themes from foreign sources. Voicing some of the "ills that flesh is heir to", Therese Awwad pinpoints one of the more devastating diseases of our modern age, loneliness and alienation: My loneliness ages like wine I arrest it between parentheses bridle it together with the tumult paste doubt to it Fadwa Touqan rejects the constrictions that outside forces impose on her freedom as a woman and as an Arab: Freedom My freedom I shall carve the words in the earth chisel their sounds over every door in the Levant. Ah, but when grief assails me, straightway I ride it off mounted on my swift, lean-flanked camel, night and day racing, sure-footed, like the planks of a litter; I urge her on down the bright highway, that back of a striped mantle; she vies with the noble, hot-paced she-camels, shank on shank nimbly plying, over a path many feet have beaten. For many a melancholy day Through desert vales I've wound my way; The faithful beast, whose back I press, In groans laments her lord's distress; In every quivering of my spear A sympathetic sigh I hear; The camel bending with his load, And struggling through the thorny road, 'Midst the fatigues that bear him down, In Hassan's woes forgets his own; Yet cruel friends my wand'rings chide, My sufferings slight, my toils deride. If Baghdad was an aging city hardly a century afterits founding, it was nonetheless under the first Abassids the symbol ofa new civilization and the home of the shining Arabic language which hadbecome a language of thought and culture. Her most moving poem, Insignificant Woman, speaks not only of women but of the alienated human race estranged in an indifferent world to its fate: No eyes followed her coffin to the end of the road Only a memory of a lifeless form passing in some lane. But these early poems are still rooted in the hearts of Arabs, and reading one in English translation is a way to savor the beauty of the bedouin woman, and Iraq and Syria's flora and fauna. -Isaac Ben Khalif The Lament Of The Vizier Abu Ismael No kind supporting hand I meet, But Fortitude shall stay my feet; No borrowed splendors round me shine, But Virtue's luster all is mine; A Fame unsullied still I boast, Obscured, concealed, but never lost- The same bright orb that led the day Pours from the West his mellowed ray. The scarcity of translations of Albanian literature has, thus, nothing to do with a lack of quality in the original (although there are admittedly many works of dubious merit which would be better left untranslated), but simply rather with a lack of literary translators from Albanian into English. In addition to the historical and political factors, Albanian is not an easy language to learn, and there are few foreigners who have managed to master it sufficiently to be able to translate literary texts. Meanwhile, the profound thoughts and incisive logic of the Shobogenzo (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye) (before 1237) , one of the first Buddhist texts written in Japanese rather than Chinese, marked a major development in Zen thought. The history of the Japanese becomes in these narratives the central events in human history and, like the historical writing in so many other cultures, including our own, the narratives create a myth that various developments in Japan are origins of practices throughout the human world. We have heard that in the reigns of the wise sovereigns of antiquity, from every one was heard the sound of songs hymning their virtue, in every house there was the song, 'How happy we are! Kinoshita, one of postwar Japan's most prominent dramatists, first became famous for his 1949 foltale-inspired play Y zuru (Evening Crane), which has since been performed over 1,000 times. This collection of more than 1,000 Buddhist and secular tales from India, China, and Japan is particularly notable for its rich descriptions of the lives of the nobility and common people in Japan at that time. While both works borrow heavily from Chinese historiographical styles and in part from Chinese mythology and religion, from the Tokugawa period onwards both Japanese and Europeans have regarded these two works as the best source of indigenous Japanese literature. Of the two major histories written in ancient Japan, the Nihongi has as its principle theme the special nature of Japan and its relationship to the divine. Kojima won the Akutagawa Prize in 1955 for his short story Amerikan sukuuru (American School), and in 1965 received the first for H go kazoku (Embracing Family). Over the years and throughout the political instability which affected Indian society at large, along with a myriad of other influences which have affected culture, language and social patterns, women's literature in India has evolved to show common experiences, a sense of sisterhood and a range of female experiences that question the recurring face of patriarchy. A collection of over one hundred inspirational poems, Gitanjali covers the breadth of life's experiences, from the quiet pleasure of observing children at play to a man's struggle with his god. I currently maintain, as net neophytes tend to do, profiles of some contemporary authors who are "Indian" (whatever that means) and write in English. Among the women who wrote was Janabai, the Varkari saint poet of the low caste Sudra community of Maharashtra, who in defence of her lower-caste status lowered the position of god to that of a fellow sweeper who aids her when she is tired and doesn't mind shovelling dirt for her. This striking scene led the great Irish poet to appreciate the depth of India's far-reaching tradition of poetry and the fame of this one Indian poet. It is for this reason that I have undertaken the humble task of compiling a basic reference for English translations of Spanish Literature, to serve as a stepping stone to the works of these unheralded talents. This first part has consisted principally of four episodes analogous in content: Isabela: darkness, Duchess, novelesque, Don Juan is self-effaced as Octavio, Naples, she lets him into her room, she acts out of lust, violation of friendship and an offense against the King's dignity; Tisbea: daylight, fisherwoman, poetic, open deceit, Tarragona, she lets him into her hut, she acts out of passion, violation of the laws of hospitality; Ana: darkness, aristocrat, dramatic, self-effaced as Mota, Seville, she lets him into her house, she acts out of love, violation of friendship and murder of an old man; Aminta: daylight, peasant girl, pastoral, open deceit, Dos Hermanas, she willingly accepts him, she acts out of greed, profanation of the marriage rite. In the third play, which is much the richest, Don Juan Manuel installs a group of itinerant beggars in the family house, repents of his maltreatment of his pious wife, and dies at the hands of his eldest son. In 1605 he went to Madrid, and about 1609, looked for shelter in La Torre de Juan Abad (Ciudad Real) because of a spiritual crisis. In Spanish-speaking lands, these names are as commonly recognized as are those of Shakespeare, Dickens and Yeats to English speakers. The true circumstances behind the composition of El burlador de Sevilla y el convidado de piedra will forever remain a mystery, but the attachment of the stone guest motif to the figure of Don Juan in almost all the later renditions of the Don Juan myth demonstrates that Tirso achieved a dramatic combination which fascinated not only the audiences and writers of his time but also those of the centuries that followed. Brian McMaster, the festival director, came up with the idea to get Spanish director Calixto Bieito to work with the Abbey Theatre Dublin on a new Frank McGuinness version of the Valle-Inclan plays. Cyrus's predicament competes in poignancy but Zameenzad's narrative scale, his sporadic lyrical and discursive energy, the determined subversion of the male text and sexuality, and wide contemporary reference have placed in our hands perhaps the most imposing untouchable epic; even as the character is brutalised beyond all common apprehension half a century down the Indian and global social drainpipe. As the past and the present begin to be defined, Karim Amir places himself at a distance from his father and takes a decision to construct time in the only personal and valid terms possible: I felt ashamed and incomplete at the same time, as if half of me were missing, and as it I'd been colluding with my enemies. The revolutionary society Philike Hetairea, founded in 1816, reflected the growing influence in Greece of the French Enlightenment and the rise of European romanticism; both furnished the intellectual framework for the War of Independence (1821 27) and spurred the postwar nationalist revival that awakened a modern Greek literature. It may seem very small business for the government to ferret out such things and suppress them, but it is an honest fact that if these plays were allowed to go unchecked, two-thirds of the native population of the provinces about Manila would be in a state of unrest which would incapacitate them for any useful work, every fifth servant, driver, street car conductor or motorman would have a general's commission, and nearly all the native clerks in government employ would be revolutionary cabinet ministers, and in a short time the organization, which would go under some such name as "The Supreme Tagalog Republic," while it never would be able to make any headway towards independence, would be in a condition to support innumerable bands of outlaws in the mountains, who would levy taxes on the villagers, collect the taxes and compel all native town officials to swear fealty to the revolutionary government just as solemnly as they have to do to the present Philippine (or American) government. ' Since literary theorists like to debunk earlier theories, I love the way Butch debunks these ideas: that Americans introduced public education, that Filipinos have a bayanihan spirit, that corruption is the main problem with our government, that Marx advocated communal property, that the elite betrayed the Philippine Revolution, that we practice a split-level Christianity, that we suffer from cultural schizophrenia, and that there is such thing as Asia. According to his papers, he was at work on various projects, including a novel about Seattle's Skid Road, a play about Philippine national hero Jose Rizal and a multi-volume work of fiction tracing the history of Filipinos in the U.S. That year Bulosan also received a Carnegie Foundation fellowship, which helped ease his financial worries. To the uninitiated foreigner, even to him who understands a good bit of the Tagalog tongue, the Filipino drama is usually something interminable and insufferably boresome; but to the furtive eyed little Malay it is the ever new, yet oft-told tale of virtue, heroism, patriotism and true love, triumphant after multitudinous vicissitudes, and tyranny, oppression, treason, avarice and lust overthrown with spectacular accessories. In certain areas of culture, notably food, there is clear evidence that no foreign food gets cooked exactly the same way that it is cooked in its country of origin (in the Philippines, spaghetti is sweet, paella is full of ingredients other than rice, Chinese noodles have no relationship to their Chinese ancestors; even McDonald's serves rice and very salty hamburgers). The personal recollections of those who knew Bulosan during his last years, and the papers and correspondence he left behind - much of which is archived at the University of Washington - paint a picture of a man who kept America in his heart, even as America turned away. With good home-grown poetry and prose becoming increasingly scarce in New Zealand, this small but dedicated company will seek out and publish the work of talented and exciting writers. Desiring this intellectual and concomitant psychological independence, we naturally must want the means, namely, studying, feeling, judging, working, and organizing our lives the way they do. Who wants the end must want the means; who wants power must want the elements constituting it; who wants a strong European-type army must want European training. In his later works he described the continuing struggle for independence and freedom as in the collection of epic poems "Epopee of the Forgotten" (1881) which commemorates the heroes who died in the National Liberation movement. On the other hand, however, the most prminent representatives of the Bulgarian literature were often preachers, spiritual and revolutionary leaders, advocates of the National Liberation, freedom and democracy. The heroes became the last representatives of Serbian statehood, the Despots of Srem - the Brankovic family - to whom cultic texts, liturgies and short vitae were dedicated in the first half of the sixteenth century in the Krusedol school; this school cultivated an artistic style which lacked nothing in comparison to its excellent models in earlier epochs. That which is most readily noticed, as a phenomenon which is developing with ever greater alacrity, is that the writers are as preoccupied with their art as they are with the subject of their description, if not more: the same theme is exposed to various narrative approaches, so that the same approaches can then be applied to different problems. PROSE FORMS The oral prose tradition's basic characteristics fit into the international system of genres and can be divided into two basic categories - the category of narratives (animal stories and fables, fairy tales, religious stories, novellas, funny stories and anecdotes) and the category of traditions (mythological, etiological, historical and cultural-historical, and legends - examples of folklore, apocryphal, or canonical biographies of the saints). Thereby, the attention of the critic and the reader, and the poet himself, slowly moved toward the writing of poetry as a specific artistic creation, which would have far-reaching consequences not only for interpreting and evaluating poetry, rather - and this is of utmost significance - for its development in the two decades to come. All the events are stylised in the correlation of the emotive-personal and heroic-epic - from the dramatic feast before the battle (which was modelled after both the Last Supper and the rituals of the Serbian slava which is dedicated to the family saint among the Serbs), to the search for dead heroes on the battlefield at Kosovo. A tradesman, in such cases, like a parson, should suit his language to his auditory; and it would be as ridiculous for a tradesman to write a letter filled with the peculiarities of this or that particular trade, which trade he knows the person he writes to is ignorant of, and the terms whereof he is unacquainted with, as it would be for a minister to quote the Chrosystome and St Austin, and repeat at large all their sayings in the Greek and the Latin, in a country church, among a parcel of ploughmen and farmers. But if the Union, as has been shown, be essential to the security of the people of America against foreign danger; if it be essential to their security against contentions and wars among the different States; if it be essential to guard them against those violent and oppressive factions which embitter the blessings of liberty, and against those military establishments which must gradually poison its very foundation; if, in a word, the Union be essential to the happiness of the people of America, is it not preposterous, to urge as an objection to a government, without which the objects of the Union cannot be attained, that such a government may derogate from the importance of the governments of the individual States?
