Anselm Hollo : from novalis the scribe is writing indefatigably casting now and again only a sullen glance at the children scowling grimly while handing the pages to a noble goddess-like woman who stands leaning against an altar upon which rests a dark vessel with clear water she dips the pages into this water & when, upon drawing them forth she sees that some of the writing has held fast she gives that page back to the scribe who then binds it in a great book but often seems peevish when his efforts prove vain & everything has been obliterated From: Anselm Hollo, heavy jars, The Toothpaste Press, West Branch, Iowa 1977. I've often given only traditional definitions, although I try, when possible, to indicate that many of these terms (especially those relating to historical periods and canonicity) have come under fire. Whatever value the guide has lies in the absurdly simple idea that great poetry expresses genuine feelings about things which are really important to human beings. And having stated thus, I cannot forget that the truest definition of poetry is poetry herself, which remains the ungraspable phantom of life- the White Whale itself, immortal, immutable, and superior to both the artist and critic, ultimately inaccessible, even to those who created it: Against long, dark clouds like a lonely torch, A misty light, a late May misty night, We hopped the fence, had a seat on the porch, The windswept spray haloed the sweeping light, She told me stories from the years before, When they saw ghosts dancing within the waves, Some friends on a blanket, down on the shore, Watched the phantoms rise from their watery graves. Green lilac buds appear that won't survive This third day of our January thaw, This gap in time, this season not their own, Merely a mockery of spring With sun's warmth wasted on a stone, And still my mind goes groping in the mud to bring Some stubborn sprouts up through the stubble hay, To follow in the path of their brief blossoming In search of brighter green to come. But snow has gathered there, has piled up, I draw near to one of them, the lowest, I bring down a bit of its light And all at once it is the meadow I walked in at ten, The bees are buzzing, What I have in my hands, these flowers, these shadows, Is it almost honey, is it snow? Poetry has nearly everything that music can give: Melody, rhythm, sentiment but it has this advantage: it can come closer to the heart. Poetry came into being because of this need, and it is perpetuated for the same reason today. " General Epic Resources What looks to be an engaging project in "questions of medium, memory and performance in relation to the percolation of the past through located poetics" In other words, perhaps, "how does the epic form (meter, rhythm and formula) facilitate the remembrance of past events in an oral tradition? The "dramatic" says that it could be acted out, and is a form of drama, while the "monologue" defines it as a speech that one person makes, either to themself or to another. In one of the most influential, though hotly contested definitions, Robert Langbaum saw the form as a continuation of an essentially Romantic "poetry of experience" in which the reader experiences a tension between sympathy and judgment. The Dramatic Monologue A dramatic monologue is a combination of the words dramatic and monologue (obviously). Everyone agrees that to be a dramatic monologue a poem must have a speaker and an implied auditor, and that the reader often perceives a gap between what that speaker says and what he or she actually reveals. Think of each couplet as a separate poem, in which the first line serves the function of the octave of a Petrarchan sonnet and the second line the sestet that is, there must be a turn, or volta, between lines 1 and 2 of each couplet. An example of witty spiritual insouciance or romantic flirtation can be seen in these translations from Ghalib and Faiz respectively (translations mine): Is it ordained that each shall get the same reply? The Ghazal Page is devoted to exploring the possibilities of the ghazal as a form for English poetry. Radif demands that a portion of the first line - comprising not more than two or three words - immediately preceding the rhyme-word at the end, should rhyme with its counterpart in the second line of the opening couplet, and afterwards alternately throughout the poem. In fact, after I complete my long term projects with structured forms I plan to explore free verse quite because I want to see how my time studying structured forms will have ultimately affected the way I approach writing free verse poetry. These features include a set of closely related themes: unrequited love, mystical devotion, philosophical rumination, ridicule of religious orthodoxy, symbolic celebration of madness and intoxication, and a sort of self-abnegating, sometimes masochistic immersion in the pangs of longing and frustration. I know that most of the best-known bastard ghazalists didn't work this way (Rich, for example, would write two to three ghazals in a day when she was working on "Homage to Ghalib ), but I walk around for days on end, and little lines will pop into my head. Having read these various pieces on ghazals, I want to make the following suggestions about ghazals written in English: Poets unfamiliar with traditional ghazals should learn as much as they can about the form in its original cultures and the poets who produced ghazals. koee din gar zindagaanee aur hai koee ummeed bar naheeN aatee laazim tha ki dekho mera rasta koee din aur maze jahaan ke apnee nazar meiN KHaak naheeN meharbaaN ho ke bulaa lo mujhe chaaho jis waqt miltee hai KHoo-e-yaar se naar iltihaab meiN muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaaN kiye hue na tha kuchch to KHuda tha, kuchch na hota to KHuda hota naqsh fariyaadee hai kiskee shoKHee-e-tehreer ka nuktaacheeN hai GHam-e-dil usko sunaaye na bane rone se aur ishq meiN be baak ho gaye shauq har rang raqeeb-e-sar-o-saamaaN niklaa Taskin ko ham na roen jo zauq-e-nazr mile us bazm meiN mujhe naheeN bantee haya kiye woh aake KHwaab meiN taskeen-e-iztiraab to de woh firaaq aur woh wisaal kahaaN ? No enjambment between couplets. The theme of the following couplets may be unrelated, may contradict the previous one, may represent another perspective on the idea, may even be part of a narrative (though this is less common). I hope to post new poems around the first of the year. Wali's poetry awakened the minds of the Persian-loving North to the beauty and richness of Urdu language, and introduced them to the true flavor of ghazal, thus encouraging its rapid growth and popularity. Volume I defines and explores the villanelle and terzanelle poetic forms and Volume II expands this exploration to include the hybridanelle, a poetic form that combines the structures of the villanelle and terzanelle into one. Radif demands that a portion of the first line , comprising not more than two or three words, immediately preceding the rhyme-word at the end, should rhyme with its counterpart in the second line of the opening couplet, and afterwards alternately throughout the poem. These rooms are of all different kinds: some are luxurious suites, with a jacuzzi, big-screen tv, and a well-stocked bar; some are beat-up little log cabins with no electricity, no windows, and a suspicious-looking outhouse around back. While I sympathize with Ali's impatience with American poets using the term for poems that don't fit the traditional definition, I have some questions and comments about the adaptation of the ghazal to English. haiN aur bhee duniya meiN suKHanwar bohot achche kehte haiN ki 'GHalib' ka hai andaaz-e-bayaaN aur aa, ki meree jaan ko qaraar naheeN hai aah ko chaahiye ik 'umr asar hone tak 'arz-e-niyaaz-e-ishq ke qaabil naheeN raha baazeechaa-e-atfaal hai duniya mere aage be-'eitadaaliyoN se, subuk sab meiN ham huve bus ki dushwaar hai har kaam ka aasaaN hona daayam paDa huaa tere dar par naheeN hooN maiN dard minnat kash-e-dawa na huaa dekhna qismat ki aap apne pe rashk aajaaye hai dhota hooN jab maiN peene ko us seem tan ke paaNv dil-e-naadaaN tujhe huaa kya hai ? I was overzealous at first, and tried linking every lexia to all eighteen others, but the configuration of links quickly resembled a dense hairball and the names of links overlapped each other like a collage of newsprint (nevertheless, suggesting a Derridiean collage and montage. The lattice of links with names caught in it suggests, indeed, a lexical lattice ). An Introduction to "Lexical Lattice" The open form of hypertext poses to poetry, a genre in which meter, stanzaic length, and rhyme scheme have The , and , for example, conform not only to stanzaic length and rhyme scheme, but also to the dictates of line sequence and recurrence. (This is because the poetic form was inherited from a time before /k/ and /g/ had split into palatized and unpalatized variants.) The first stressed syllable of the off-verse, or second half-line, usually alliterates with one or both of the stressed syllables of the on-verse, or first half-line. (So that does not alliterate with a word like but with, for instance, .) The first syllables of words often do not receive primary stress in the present language, not even secondary stress, and therefore specially prepared lists of words of which the stressed syllables start with the same sound or sounds will be of interest to anyone studying or creating aural effects and imagery in verbal communication. Old English poetic forms Old English poetry appears to be based upon one system of verse construction, a system which remained remarkably consistent for centuries, although some patterns of classical Old English verse begin to break down at the end of the Old English period. However, if alliteration is, in a more sophisticated and traditional fashion, interpreted as the repetition of speech sounds at the beginning of syllables, and of stressed syllables only, then word-initial consonance or assonance need not be alliteration and vice versa. The names mentioned in the first few lines were women novelists of the era (Mrs. Inchbald translated Lovers' Vows, the referred to in , and Jane Austen criticized Mary Brunton's 1811 novel Self-Control in ; go to for more information about some of these writers). It wasn't funny, they had the money, a nest egg for a rainy day but they'd had enough, and in violent mood, started an affray One grabbed his legs, another his head, blows rained down in a flood, they all saw red, wanted him dead, but ran when they drew blood. That man of renown, Alan Greenspan, stepped down, And the Fed got a guy named Bernanke, While a fellow named Scooter, who seemed a straight-shooter, Faced charges of high hanky-panky. To Miss Jane Austen, reputed author of , a Novel lately published On such Subjects, no Wonder that she should write well In whom so united those Qualities dwell; Where "dear ", darling Maid, With Sense so attemper'd is finely portray'd. Heads together, they formed a huddle, their plan to precipitate whilst a jester in a sou'wester was let in through the gate. Echo Verse A poem in which the last syllable or two of a main line is repeated, perhaps with different spelling or meaning, as if an echo. I love paved over and bricked in spaces too, if they are beautifully proportioned and monumentally conceived as is Red Square at the University of Washington and Red Square in Moscow. The words childlike and childish both mean 'characteristic of a child,' but childlike suggests meekness and innocence Couplet Shakespearean sonnets usually end in a couplet and are a pair of lines that are the same length and usually rhyme and form a complete thought. Sir Muhammad Iqbal, distinguished lawyer, philosopher, poet, as learned in Western science as in Eastern tradition, inspired millions of his fellow-Muslims in India to fight for self-reform, and self-realization as a necessary prelude to independent nationhood. How am I to change the laws of motion, replace the continents into those symmetries of love on which the moonlight will not be a blemish; hate not exceed love; love's analogies not become its functions; one's own life not stretch itself beyond one's gift? n hamaare Khudaa kii qudrat hai kabhi ham un ko kabhii apane ghar ko dekhate hai. During this time, the poet also wrote Kr l-Duch, an original genesic epopee revealing Poland's legendary past, but also showing in this context differing political ideas of Poles and the two different models of national poetry: and his own, the two poets being the two most perfect of the ancient spirits. The remains of ancient cultures of the Mediterranean made this a trip in both space and time, resulting in poems expressing the poet's reflections about his nation and analogies between the history of ancient Greece and Poland . Five No plays about Komachi are in the present repertory; Komachi and the Hundred Nights presents another aspect of the Komachi legend, and Sotoba Komachi (translated in Keene, Anthology of Japanese Literature) ranks nearly on a level with Komachi at Sekidera. Much of the great poetry in No lies somewhat outside the main Japanese poetic traditions, but Komachi at Sekidera is at once a superb No play and a splendid expression of the sources of Japanese poetry. It all adds up to an archetypal - if unusually poignant - case of east-west misunderstanding: a west earnestly looking eastwards for an ancient spiritual wisdom, which it receives through the filter of sexed-up translations that most Persian scholars regard as seriously flawed, and which recreate a Rumi wholly divorced from his Islamic context; while in the east, a Republican Turkish government anxious to integrate Turkey with Europe bans Rumi's Sufi brotherhood as part of its attempt to embrace a west it perceives as rational, industrial, intolerant of superstition and somehow post-mystical. May He, the Almighty comfort and bless them in this life and the next And may He, the Most Merciful touch our hearts to be grateful for what we have and to lower the wing of gentleness to each other, seeking any means of help and support to fortify the distressed within the Ummah. I plan on later categorising the poems and grouping them into subjects as soon as they begin to become too many to fit on the main page. According to his most authoritative modern biographer, the Persian scholar Franklin D Lewis, "while Rumi seems slightly out of place in the company of Ginsberg, and seriously misunderstood as a poet of sexual love, it simply defies credulity to find Rumi in the realm of haute couture. In all the talk of economic development, growing cities, higher standards of living - I still see the spiritual poverty, the broken hearts and instability of human beings, whose needs are no longer met. ISLAMIC POETRY As-Salam Alaikum This is a collection of Islamic poems I am attempting to compile. bhupa yatra pururavah prabhrtayo jata vidhoranvaye yadvadya bharatadayah kurumukha bhismambikeyadayah bhubharaksayakanksibhih suravarairabhyarthitah sripatih tatravirbhavitum sahamaravarairicchan harih patu mam 11 Lord Hari, who wished to incarnate at the desire of eminent gods (such as Brahma and Siva) to relieve the sin-burdened Earth; Lord Hari, who incarnated along with the eminent gods of the clan of the Moon (where kings such as Pururava, Yadu, Bharata, Kuru, and others like Bhisma and Dhrtarastra were born); to relieve the sin-burdened earth; May this Lord, who is the consort of Laksmi, protect me. Since talks failed, he started on his return journey the same day in Pushyami Star, told Karna that in 7 days, on New Moon Day in Jyeshta Star, all should assemble at Kurukshetra for the Great War, and returned to Upaplavya. One may read the epic just as an excellent tale, for it has all the elements of good storytelling, yet it also includes the psychological dilemmas inherent in life, though the meaning behind some of the episodes is not always clear - each reader must interpret the episodes according to his own insight and vision. Drawing verses from the Mahabharata itself, Sri Madhvacarya shows the Supremacy of Lord Visnu (who is extolled in the Vedas above all), the supremacy of Vayu among other deites (except for Laksmi and Brahma), the limited and varying powers of the other gods, and the hierarchy of souls. The Western calendar has undergone many variations and adjustments from time to time e.g., at one stage the first six months had 31 days each while the last six months were 30 days each. As Dhritarashtra and Gandhari fail to curb Duryodhana's hatred of the Pandavas - and more especially of his birthday twin, Pandu's second son, Bhima - the peoples of Hastinapura are inexorably propelled into war. the Arabic worlds The influence of Islam was not found in all aspects of medieval society yet its impact, found especially on Christianity and medieval intellectual life, was strongly felt In canto VIII of the Inferno, where Dante describes the existence of mosques in the city of Dis, and in canto XXVIII, where one encounters Mohammed and Eli in Hell, Dante conveys his attitude towards Islam His placement of these aspects of Arabic culture amongst the sinners of Hell corroborates the notion that Dante held a contemptuous and negative view towards the Muslim world His antipathy for such a culture is based not simply on a prejudiced view that he heldn but rather on his disgust towards its effects on the Christian Church as well as on medieval intellectual lifeW Based on his inclusion of Muslim mosques and leaders in Hell, one can see that the impact on medieval life obviously perturbed Dante, for he would have preferred to have his culture completely devoid of any Islamic influences. The major struggle in Italy at during his lifetime was between the Guelphs, a nationalist party who supported the papacy; and the Ghibellines, who supported European unification under the Holy Roman Empire (whose power after the Great Interregnum (1254 - 1273) was waning.) The Guelphs had been active in enlisting cities who were demanding municipal rights and liberties - and one of these was Florence. When at last the task of translating, revising and re-revision, weighin and re-weighting, criticising and re-criticising every phrase, every possible interpretation, and every allusion was done,-first in the seclusion of his own study, and then with the sympathetic aid of his friends, Charles Eliot Norton, James Russell Lowell and others, the work was sent to the printer in 1864. Dante Alighieri was a conservative, devout Christian, as well as a strong representative of the attitude of his time Such a perspective is displayed in his book, the Inferno, in which he responds to one of the influences of his time period. Having said that the most surprising thing to me about reading Dante's 'Hell' is how little it has to do with religion, and how much it has to do with the politics of the church and the secular politics of Florence. The basis of the work with its copious, information and illuminating notes, expositions and illustrations was his courses of Lecutre on Dante given in many places during many years; in these Lecture it was his early custom to read in translation, the whole or parts of the poem chosen for his subject, with his notes, expositions and illustrations interspersed. Milton's God, on the other hand, emphasizes the uxoriousness rather than the actual eating: Was she thy God, that thou didst obey Before his voice, or was she made thy guide, Superior, or but equal, that to her Thou didst resign thy manhood, and the place Wherein God set thee above her made of thee, And for thee, whose perfection far excelled Hers in all real dignity. But around this character has thrown a singularity of daring, a grandeur of sufferance, and a ruined spledour, which constitutes the very height of sublimity" (S.T Coleridge) Assess the justice of this view of Satan in Paradise Lost. The artist William Blake, who worked in the eighteenth century and produced the most adequate illustrations of Paradise, (also of Dante's Inferno, and the biblical Book of Job) considered; The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels and God, and at liberty when of Devils and Hell, is because he was a true Poet and of the Devil's party without knowing it. He has evidently been on much better terms with fellow students, since his poems on the death of Hobson indicate convivial behavior (Parker I: 94) and his last college exercise, the Oratorio pro Arte ("oration on behalf of art"), discusses, among other things, the value of worthy and congenial friendship. According to Hard Sayings of the Bible, this word usually means "side" in Hebrew; therefore, "as some Reformers put it, woman was not taken from man's feet, as if she were beneath him, or from his head, as if she were over him, but from his side, as an equal with him" (Kaiser 95). I am trying to prove or at least support the idea that Milton tries to portray him, in subtle ways, as not being omnipotent, benevolent or really king at all. The movement back to monarchism had been tending for some time, and it can only be seen as an act of genuine belief in his cause; a last gesture of faith, perhaps; that Milton published A Ready and Easy Way to Establish a Free Commonwealth this year, under his own name. is a prosperous scrivener-legal aide, real-estate agent, notary, preparer of documents, money-lender; he is also active as a composer of liturgical music. In the repetition of passages, the story gives us not only a description but the sense of Gilgamesh's journey into the twelve leagues of darkness: "At the end of five leagues, the darkness was thick and there was no light, he could see nothing ahead and nothing behind him. That night, however, Enkidu had a dream which he related the following day to Gilgamesh, in which the gods were meeting in council, and Enlil was declaring that, because of his involvement with the deaths of Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven, Enkidu must die. We who met and scaled the mountain, Seized the Bull of Heaven and slew it, Demolished Humbaba who dwelt in the Pine Forest, Killed lions in the passes of the mountains, My friend whom I love so much, who experienced every hardship with me, Enkidu my friend whom I love so much, who experienced every hardship with me The fate of mortals conquered him! Gilgamesh says to him, to Utnapishtim the Faraway: 'Scarcely had sleep surged Over me, When straightway thou dost touch and rouse me' Utnapishtim says to him, to Gilgamesh: 'Go, Gilgamesh, count thy wafers, That the days thou hast slept may become known to thee: Thy ftrst wafer is dried out The second is leathery, the third is soggy; The crust of the fourth has turned white; The ftfth has a mouldy cast, The sixth (still) is fresh coloured. In rabbinic literature Lilith is variously depicted as the mother of Adam's demonic offspring following his separation from Eve or as his first wife, who left him because of their incompatibility. A goddess who was wandering among the banks siezed the swaying tree And - at the behest of Anu and Enlil - brought it to Inanna's garden in Uruk. Mesopotamia was a land of intermittent drought and violent floods; this was not a kindly tame nature at all, as can be seen in the conflict between the wild Enkidu, who undoes traps, interfering with people's livelihood, and the civilizing Harlot, who lures Enkidu into the delights and responsibilities of civilization. In a dream, a great demon comes to take Enkidu and drags him to Hell, a House of Dust where all the dead end up; as he is dying, he describes Hell: The house where the dead dwell in total darkness, Where they drink dirt and eat stone, Where they wear feathers like birds, Where no light ever invades their everlasting darkness, Where the door and the lock of Hell is coated with thick dust. There they encourage each other to face death triumphantly: All living creatures born of the flesh shall sit at last in the boat of the West, and when it sinks, when the boat of Magilum sinks, they are gone; but we shall go forward and fix our eyes on this monster. Plot Summary Prologue - Gilgamesh King in Uruk A eulogy to wise and handsome Gilgamesh, King of Uruk (Uruk being the biblical Erech, known today as Warka), who built brick walls, a rampart and a temple for Anu, god of the firmament. The theme of the rashness of one beloved companion s pursuit of fame and honor leading to the death of the other, and the subsequent agony of remorse, echoes from this early epic down through literature, notably in the grief of over the death of Patroclus. I have included the larger context with the specific appearances fo Lilith in bold. During the fourth millennium B.C., human settlements underwent a surprisingly rapid transformation from villages into developed cities with large populations, temples and palaces. Many stories and myths were written about Gilgamesh, some of which were written down about 2000 B.C. in the Sumerian language on clay tablets which still survive; the Sumerian language, as far as we know, bears no relation to any other human language we know about. The first blow is for meeting the terms of their agreement, the second blow is for kissing Bercilak's wife, the third blow is for Gawain's one failure in accepting the girdle. Often the joke is on the poet himself; the limerick is a method, sometimes hostile, of laughing away "sexual fears and impotencies-real and imaginary-in short satirical efforts of elaborate rhyme, in which, be it said once and for all, woman is the usual butt of the satire" (Legman xl). Limericks proudly broke into what had been the one, unbroachable frontier in proper English society: smut. Whereas standard limericks are usually humorous and often off-color or downright crude, Poetic Limericks span a broad range of subject matter and, using words as an art form, employ literary devices found in more traditional forms of poetry. Various writers have proposed special restrictions (such as requiring just one weak beat at the start of lines one and two, or requiring matching the initial number of weak beats over certain lines), but all such restrictions fail the empirical test of describing what good anthologies and recognized masters have produced. It's doubtful that the theatrical partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan would have maintained its long and enormously popular success in the absence of W. S. Gilbert's propensity for limericks, which appear in so many of his lyrics, such as his courtship advice from the 1888 light opera, The Yeoman of the Guard, on page 94. This is my preferred method because I like not knowing, initially, where I'll break the line, so my first stanza is written according to line break and enjambment, not word choice with a sestina in mind. Going back at least to the thirteenth century, triolets are short, usually witty poems, just perfect for tucking into a box of candy or some flowers.
